Online Lessons at Luck Studios with Zoom or Facetime
Luck Studios was already offering some online lessons before coronavirus hit in March 2020, so we were ready to switch! Currently all lessons are being taught online. Online lessons offer some advantages that in-person lessons do not. The student does not have to make their way through our local (and sometimes quite heavy) traffic to attend a lesson. Therefore, we have greater flexibility in lesson scheduling. Fewer lessons need to be rescheduled as a student can attend a lesson even if they are a little under the weather. Also, lessons can be taught to students in far-off places and if you relocate from the Hampton Roads area you do not need to search for a new teacher!
There are also a few drawbacks to which I think we are all becoming accustomed! There are, of course, occasional technical challenges and internet outages. However, I have found these have been few and far between. In all cases so far, students and I have been able to overcome those challenges together. If a lesson cannot proceed due to technical issues, I will try to help fix the issue if I can and make sure that the missed lesson time is covered, either by rescheduling for another time or by offering a tuition credit. In addition, I am always available to students' questions during the week - they may call, text, or email me any time!
Teaching-related challenges, such as not being able to mark in students' music or demonstrate particular techniques on an instrument, have been alleviated using technology! Zoom is wonderful for this - allowing me to quickly switch camera angles, share and annotate students' music on the screen, and share videos, games, and other materials with students! Actually, as I am learning how to use online technologies better, I am finding that I have learned to engage students in ways and with technologies that I probably would not have discovered without this opportunity. Spring 2020 we held the first Luck Studios Online Recital - it was a hit and allowed families to attend from all over the world for the first time in the studio's history. I am excited to see what we can do with this technology in the future.
I do not plan to teach exclusively online forever. I am looking forward to the day when we will be able to safely meet for lessons again in the studio! I have grown to appreciate what online lessons can offer to families and I will continue to hold online lessons for those students who live far away or as needed for local students.
If you have any questions about online lessons please know I am happy to answer them and to listen to any concerns you may have! Call, text or email any time.
